Storage Units: a Historical Solution

Civilisations over time have devised ways of storing items.  For example, in ancient China during the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE), granaries were built to store grain and other food supplies for the population. These granaries were typically built in strategic locations near fields and waterways, and were managed by government officials. While these ancient storage facilities may not be directly comparable to modern self-storage units, they demonstrate a long-standing need to store and organise our belongings in convenient and safe locations.

Modern Self Storage Units

Self storage units as we know them today are a relatively modern concept that emerged in the United States in the mid-20th century.

In 1958, the first modern self-storage facility was opened in Texas by a businessman named Russ Williams. Williams noticed that people needed extra space to store their belongings, but they didn’t want to rent a larger apartment or move to a bigger house.

The first self storage facility was a simple row of garages that customers could rent on a monthly basis.

Williams marketed the garages as a way for people to store their seasonal items, such as holiday decorations or lawn furniture, and as a place for small business owners to store their inventory.

A Good Idea Catches on…

The idea was popular, and other entrepreneurs began opening self storage facilities across the United States. By the 1970s, self storage had become a thriving industry, with more than 2,000 facilities across the country.  The industry continued to grow and evolve In the decades that followed. In 2019, Statista reported there were 47,863 self storage facilities in the United States alone, with units available in a wide range of sizes and configurations, from small lockers to large warehouse-style spaces.
