Boylin’s Ten Top Tips for Self Storing Your Stuff!

So, you’ve decided to rent a self storage unit, great move! Soon you’ll be living with the many benefits this decision will afford you. But before you begin packing up, Boylin’s invites you to take five minutes to read our ten top tips on how to pack…

Ten Top Tips on How To Pack for Storage

  1. Be prepared! Make sure you have the correct materials, e.g., enough sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and packing paper to protect your items. Choose good quality boxes to help to keep your items secure and avoid using old or weak boxes that may collapse in storage. If possible, try and use the same sized boxes, as they will be easier to stack when you get to your unit.
  2. Disassemble large items! Take apart large items, such as beds and tables, to make them easier to move and save space in your unit. Make sure to keep all screws etc. in a labeled bag and tape it to the item so you don’t lose them.
  3. Use space-saving techniques! Use vacuum-sealed bags for clothes and bedding.
  4. Label your boxes! Clearly label each box with the contents where it can be easily seen. Consider packing your items according to category as this will make it easier to find what you need later on. Don’t forget to detail if there are fragile items inside, and it is worth noting if a box is heavy or light.
  5. Draw your layout! Once you get to your unit, draw a map of where you will store each box. Take a photograph of this with your phone so that you will always know where the box is that you wish to locate.
  6. Mind your back! Boylin’s suggests underfilling if you are using large boxes to house heavy items. If you have used different sized boxes, use smaller boxes for heavy items to remove the temptation to overfill.
  7. Put heavy items at the bottom! Pack heavier items at the bottom of the storage unit, and lighter items on top.
  8. Protect fabrics! If you are storing any large fabric items, such as a sofa, consider using a cover to protect from dust, scratches, and stains.
  9. Put more frequently used items close to the door! Save yourself time and effort later by keeping the items you will frequently require access to in the most accessible place.
  10. Keep an aisle between rows of boxes! This will afford access to items stored at the back of your unit without unpacking everything from the front.
